BERKSHIRE AUTOMOBILE CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING AT NEWBURY

The 17th annual general meeting of the Berkshire Autombile Club was held at Ham Manor, Newbury [on Saturday, May 8th, 1922], by kind permission of the Country Road Club. Major E.R. Portal presided ande among those present were Mrs. Loder-Symonds, Mrs.Wilson Noble, Mrs. Yatman, Captain W.Waring, Mr S. à Court, the hon. treasurer (Mr. E.S. Shrapnell Smith), and the hon. secretary (Miss E. V. Noble). Letter of regret for absence were read from the president (Liet.-Colonel. Leslie Wilson, M.P.), Mr. A.D. Selkirk, Mr . S E. Garcke, and others.

In moving the adoption of the report and accounts for the past year, the chairman mentioned that thanks to the fine weather the club encloseure at Henley had been well attended on all four days. The committee were arranging to take the same piece of ground this year and for tea to be provided, as well as hot water for members who brought their own tea-baskets, but no luncheons would be supplied as members generally preferred to bring their own, thus making it a real picnic. Ample room would be again available for standing cars and for keeping boats at night, while a small charge would be made to help defray the general expenses, including the cost of a watchmen who would be on duty day and night. Owing to his having left the neighbourhood, Major. H. Ingram had been unable to continue to act as hon. secretary, but the committee had been most fortunate in securing the help of Miss Noble to fill the post. The club had lost a few members who had resigned, but 12 new ones had already joined this year. Vincent's G.W.R. Garage at Reading would again be available free to members as in previous years.

The report and accounts were carried unanimously. reviewing the accounts, the hon. Treasurer reported that all arrears of outstanding or overpaid subscriptions had been cleared off. The club's investments were shown at book value, and since the accounts were made up part of the 5 per cent. War Loan had been sold in order to pay off the bank overdraft and leave a working balance in hand. For the current year he estimated that, even allowing for a loss on Henley Regatta, the accounts would show a credit balance owing to non-recurring expenditure.

A proposal to increase the annual subscription of lady members, who at present pay 10s. 6d. a year, was discussed, and was deferred until the autumn.

The chairman, committee, club officers and hon. auditors were duly re-elected, with Mr. S.E. Garcke added to the committee, and Miss E.V. Noble as hon. secretary. On the proposal of Mrs. Wilson Noble, the meeting agreed to invite Countess Roberts to become an hon. member of the club, and this was seconded by the chairman, who reminded the meeting that the late Field-Marshal Lord Roberts had been their president from the foundation of the club until his decease.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman, and to the County Road Club for allowing the meeting to be held at Ham Manor.

After the meeting the members were very kindly entertained to tea by Miss Noble in the drawing room of Ham Manor, an old house standing back from the Bath Road and situated near the racecourse, in the midst of charming grounds and gardens.
